CHS PhD students enrolling in coursework subjects
PhD candidates within CHS are examined on the basis of the PhD thesis only. However, you or your supervisor/s may suggest that your research program is supplemented with relevant coursework subjects. PhD candidates interested in undertaking CHS subjects are required to formally enrol in these subjects. This requirement is to ensure that all CHS subjects have a complete student enrolment, and that minimum student numbers are met to ensure the subject can run.
Enrolling in CHS subjects means participating in set classes and completing the subject assessment. In general, the assessment for CHS subjects is designed to be both flexible and relevant to postgraduate students’ needs. Completion of postgraduate assessment is usually beneficial in terms of developing content knowledge and ensuring that timelines are achieved, for example, completion of research ethics application (assessment for Principles of Research Design). If you do not think that the current assessment for the CHS subject you want to enrol in is relevant to your needs, you may discuss and negotiate a suitable alternative assessment with the subject co-ordinator, as long as it is deemed relevant to the subject’s learning objectives.
To enrol in an additional coursework subject, you must complete the Adding and Deleting Additional Subjects form available at http://www.gradresearch.unimelb.edu.au/current/forms. This is subject to the approval of the relevant subject co-ordinator, your supervisor, and Head of Department or nominee. Subjects unrelated to the research program will normally not be approved. Applications to study or withdraw from additional subjects must be made in advance as retrospective applications will not be approved.
